Conservatives, Liberals....how do you reconcile your values and how do your actions affect the political direction of the United States of America>?

Liberalism and conservatism aren't opposites, or even mutually exclusive. Why they're thought of as so sometimes confuses me. Although I think it might be because conservatism and progressivism are opposites, and most progressives are liberal, so the two kind of became associated with each toher.
