Be honest, do you save first and spend what’s left, or spend first and save what’s left?

For years, a certain amount per month goes into savings. I treat that as you would a payment. Every so often I increase the amount. About 20 years ago i was quite poor but determined to change things. So started off saving a very small amount every month.
