If US consumers can't avoid buying essentials due to tariffs, how do they cope with higher costs on items they need?

What would happen to everyday items like coffee and chocolate if the US couldn't import them anymore? Would they really disappear from stores?
We use age instead of time dilation in Einstein’s theory of relativity. I think this avoids any confusion about time. May I ask this question?
