Why do some people think the far left is hurting the Democratic Party more than helping it?

What does Trump have in mind for Washington D.C., exactly? Even if he puts every single member of the National Guard there, that's just a couple thousand troops to police a city of almost a million people. The troops would be sitting ducks.
