What traits do toxic people find attractive, and how can I protect myself from them?

What are real people's experiences dealing with serious illnesses in countries without universal healthcare, and do they think it's worth moving to a country with such a system?
If science can't do much with claims of the supernatural, except to eliminate fraud, delusion etc, are any of the stronger non-theistic positions, exceeding agnosticism, rational? If so, how, given that atheists generally rely on science?
