What makes political parties like the Republicans seem more appealing at certain times, even after controversial leadership?

Is criticizing someone, while he or she is not present, without digging into his personal life, a bad thing, and does this always necessarily cause damage to anyone else, like when students discuss how there teacher explains lessons, or give exams?
