Why is it that, the more materialistic a person is, the more arrogant and aggressive it becomes?

What do you feel about a person who's your "best bud" for today then never contact you again for several years? Someone you once had a relationship with a while back.
Is living a materialist lifestyle actually quite peaceful since you can indulge in inanimate things that don't talk back like another human being can?
