Why do some people seem to repeatedly attract partners who can't handle emotional intensity?

Is it common for people to want to stop loving someone who loves them deeply? Why might someone choose to reject the love of their true soulmate?
Why does the vast majority of people actually care who the president of the United States is, or which party the president represents? Why do so many people believe that any U.S. president has any real power in the grand scheme of things?
