Why do narcissists seem to get worse when you show them genuine love and care?

I’m an 18 year old female and I’m seeing my ex, his parents don’t like me and will do everything in their power to prevent us from seeing eachother. However, we both want to continue our relationship but it’s hard. What do you do in this situation?
