Why did Lincoln say, "Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent . . . ?"

Because people used to be able to write well and give words a more poetic flow.
Just read some of the letters home written by civil war soldiers (the ones that could write that is). They are a far cry from today "hey, whut u don?"
