Why do news outlets continue to engage in advocacy journalism when it seems to be hurting their credibility and ratings?

Because some people aren't interested in the truth but only in hearing their thoughts confirmed. So there's a demand for that, and in a capitalist society that inevitably creates a supply, no matter the impact.
