It's a weird (sorry 😆. ENOUGH!) thing about American politics that the parties kind of swapped sides ideologically.
It could happen because each major US party represented different sections of elite interests, instead of class interests. Their support is vertical with their section of the elite allied with certain sections of the population. As demographics cf those populations changed, so party elites adapted.
In Europe, the social democratic parties all came out of labour movements but compromised (or were compromised by) being part of a capitalist democracy. The conservatives were and are parties of the elite getting support from the middle classes protecting relative privilege. These bonds have become strained but that is a different story.
If you look at political values, there is no doubt that Lincoln's republicans were more like today's democrats than the Confederate republicans were. In terms of geography, also.

@Patriot96 I'm in the wrong continent to watch CNN and your brain is in a different continent to your body.. I get my information from reading history.
Half the people claiming Lincoln's heritage defend statues of Robert E Lee and agree with those 'very fine people' waving Confederate flags.

@Burnley123 unlike the dems, Lincoln would never approve of abortion, open borders, child castration and puberty blockers. He would push for lower taxes, less government waste.

@Patriot96 The US doesn't have open borders now but it literally did at the time. It had an open door to immigration. Most if your nation originated from European immigrants. Including (I'm guessing, your own ancestors.)
Lincoln also intriduced the first national income tax and effectively created the IRS.
maybe you could read a little but about the history of your own country?

@Patriot96 The closest to child castrations there is in the US is circumcision.

@Patriot96 You need to stop listening to people who make money from making you afraid.
