Remember when Republicans tricked 50 asylum seekers into going to Martha Vineyard for the lols and normal people just helped them?

Yeah, Ron DeSantis spent Florida public money on flying 50 people, but he didn't have enough asylum seekers in Florida, so he flew them from Texas, at an initial cost of $615,000 ($12,000 each) LOL!!

Plus, those same asylum seekers got a new legal work status because they're witnesses in a major lawsuit & possible victims of a crime!

TALLAHASSEE — Florida has agreed to pay up to $1 million to two law firms to defend it following Gov. Ron DeSantis’ controversial decision last summer to relocate nearly 50 Venezuelan migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

So far, the state has paid nearly $112,000 to the firms Consovoy McCarthy and Campbell Conroy & O’Neil to represent DeSantis and other state officials in a class action lawsuit filed in Boston by attorneys representing the migrants.

This is on top of the nearly $1.6 million paid to Destin, Fla.-based aviation firm Vertol Systems Company, which the state contracted for the migrant flights.
Yes. I remember someone thought that was sooo clever, and I told him that during the Civil Rights Movement, segregationists did the exact same thing; called the "Reverse Freedom" riders where they lured blacks with one-way bus tickets to northern and western cities while promising (nonexistent) good-paying jobs. I asked him:

"You folks have a racist playbook you use ?"
I don’t recall that he replied (they rarely do). 🤨

@bijouxbroussard It's insane when you read or listen to what 20th century civil rights activists were saying and you realize they've been repeating themselves for over a century. It moves from insane to infuriating when you realize that it isn't just that no one is listening, it's that there is a deliberate effort of recuperating their ideals so their messaging only reaches the majority once it's been filter through the machine.
@bijouxbroussard Yep, the DeSantis stunt totally backfired as well.
... But islanders, after gathering enough information to realize these people needed help, quickly jumped in.

Leaders from St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Edgartown offered two buildings as shelters. One housed men, the other women and children. High school students studying AP Spanish started translating. Beds, food, and toys were made available, then even more: access to a dentist, to lawyers, to soccer balls.

. . .

Almost immediately, critics accused Republicans involved in the flights of violating human trafficking laws. Law enforcement officials in Texas, Massachusetts, and elsewhere took notice.
