What stories in the news have you been paying attention to recently?

Perhaps you’ve been following headlines in a newspaper like The New York Times or watching breaking news on CNN. Maybe you’ve been seeing videos or reading links people have posted in your social feeds. Perhaps you’re having current events discussions with your classmates in the cafeteria or with your family around the dinner table. Or maybe you’ve been exchanging texts with your friends about what’s going on in your school or community.
News can be many different things: reporting on major events or political issues; sports features or theater reviews; or even news you can use, like exercise tips or financial advice. And it can be global, national or local.
No matter where you get your news, or what kind of news you’ve been following, simply tell us about one story that has interested you lately, where you learned about it, and why it got your attention. You can post your response as a written comment OR as a 90-second video.
Choose one article, essay, photo, video or podcast published in The Times or elsewhere that interests you. (Just make sure it’s something that’s appropriate for a family newspaper.)
Tell me about it and why it got your attention, either in a written comment of up to 1,500 characters (about 250 words) or in a 90-second video. (If you choose to make a video response, you’ll need to upload it to a third-party site, such as YouTube or TikTok, and then post the link in the comments section. Make sure your settings are public, and please take care not to use any copyrighted images or music.)

The article that caught my attention was "Four Wild Ways to Save the Koala (that just might work). I was first intrigued by this article because I was unaware that koalas were an endangered species in the first place. Reading through the article, I was also surprised to find out that Koala populations are being greatly impacted by things such as predators, cars, and disease. Out of all of these three things, the author goes onto explain how disease is by far the factor that is most heavily impacting the species. The article then goes to to explain that scientists have gone on to create a vaccine to save these koalas. So far, it appears asthough the results of the vaccine are very positive. The only difficulty scientists faced was finding a way to administer the second vaccine dose with relative ease. This however was solved when they invented a chip that administers the second dose at the correct time. With all of these scientific efforts, the koala population is rising steadily, and it is the hope of many that they wont remain endangered for much longer.
I have been intrigued about Oakland Athletics's move to Sacramento. Because I live in Sacramento and am an avid sports fan, I couldn't be happier. But, Oakland fans are livid. After the Oakland Raiders moved to Las Vegas, it was only a matter of time before the A's followed suit. All in all, I hope that A's fans are still able to appreciate their time with an amazing sports team and I hope that Sacramento could be a future permanent home to a major league team.
The article titled "Supreme Court Considers How Far Cities Can Police Homelessness" caught my attention due to its relevance to the ongoing crisis of homelessness and the potential impact of the Supreme Court's decision on addressing this issue in the United States. The case revolves around a group of homeless individuals in Grants Pass, Oregon, who challenged local ordinances that prohibited sleeping and camping with any form of bedding in public spaces. The outcome of this case carries significant implications for homelessness policy across the country. The article highlights the broader debate surrounding homelessness regulation, emphasizing the delicate balance between protecting the civil rights of homeless individuals and addressing concerns related to public health and safety. Interestingly, the issue has brought together leaders from both left-leaning and conservative groups, who are urging the Supreme Court to clarify the extent of legal authority in managing encampments that have become increasingly prevalent in the Western states. At the heart of the matter is the question of whether these ordinances went beyond reasonable limits and effectively punished individuals for their homelessness, potentially violating the Eighth Amendment's prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment. The homeless residents challenging the ordinances argue that they are involuntarily homeless due to the lack of available shelter beds, and therefore, the city should not be able to punish
Growing up the daughter of a football coach the death of O.J. Simpson caught my attention. O.J.'s other controversies also attracted me to this story. Since the murder of his wife, the question has always been if O.J. did it. His story has always been very intriguing to me this amazing renowned football player would go to the lengths of killing his wife. Dave Chapelle said it best he might be a murderer but he "ran for over 11 thousand yards." After all the glove didn't fit.
The news that caught my eye was " A Little Bit of Dirt is Good for You". So many disgusting organisms like worms and other creatures live in dirt so I wondered how it would be good for humans. Reading throughout the article, I was surprised that being exposed to dirt for years will lower the rate 2 of Crohn’s disease, asthma and allergies, likely because of their exposure to a diverse array of microbes. This amazed me because I didn't know dirt was capable of lowering those rates. The article further goes to say that you should play around with dirt like kids do. I often think that dirt is not healthy but apparently it isn't all true.
The recent news that grabbed my attention is the diss battle between the big 3s in the hip-hop scene. Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole are called the Big 3s. Kendrick stimulated the diss battle by saying Drake and J. Cole are not the big 3s and said he is the only one who should called as big. He included the line in a feature of Metro and Future's album, We Don’t Trust You that says he is the better rapper than any of you included in the big 3. J. Cole dissed back but, he apologized about the beef since he still likes Kendrick and he respects him. However, Drake released his diss track “Push Ups” to diss back Kendrick. He included the line that says, Kendrick can’t make any proper contract since he is giving 50% of his whole income to company he work for.
I recently saw in the news that a cafe that is managed by Koreans has become a landmark in Irvine. A lot of people who live in California enjoy that cafe because of its distinctive and special taste compared to other cafes. Korean Baristas utilize many Korean traditional recipes, which can be a new taste for Americans. Many celebrities including Justin Bieber frequently visited the cafe to have special beverages and desserts. One of the factors to become successful in LA was to show the Korean way of jokes and keen consideration towards their customers. I was really glad that many Koreans in foreign country are enhancing our nations’ position.
The news that I had got recently was the climate change and the bad conditions of the world. Every second, every minute, and every hour even days. The ocean sea level is increasing. People are struggling because of the tough weather that has been increasing in recent years. People got easier fevers because of the weather getting colder and the weather getting hot. People turn on the AC a lot that is the reason a lot of the weather is very hot all the climate change happens because of illegal trashing and the problem of is too many people do it and the earth is getting damaged very quickly
My childhood home was perfectly nestled in the Andean mountains close to Bogotá. Hidden in the forest, it overlooked the San Rafael Reservoir which provided all the water for the city. The reservoir's might always impressed me as a child. This year, Colombia has been through the worse droughts in decades. Forest fires close to Bogotá have become common and the inhabitants haven't seen rain for months. Recently as I watched the news from my new home in Miami, I realized that the San Rafael Reservoir where I grew up was almost completely dried out. The lack of rain and the rapid water consumption in the city had been draining the water and now all of it is mostly gone. This piece of news caught my eye especially because this year I am taking an elective course that deals with what we call "merchants of doubt" in science. The course focuses on how society has purposefully casted doubt around various scientific topics in order to push an agenda. One of the most covered topics is that of climate change and climate change skeptics. Seeing the droughts going on back home really showed me that all the things I had been learning in class were becoming a reality. My community is being affected by a heating Earth and a changing climate. Today, the drought affecting the country is ongoing. There are no signs that the San Rafael Reservoir will recover any time soon. All I can do is pray for all the people back home and hope that the rains come back soon.
