It's maybe because you don't have an institutionalized/represented leftwing, but I assure you it can go absolutely apeshìt too, especially before Russia turned to cultivate right-wing populism instead.

Populism is the scourge, that how it happens to be a mostly right-wing thing isn't something written in stone.
@Elessar That’s entirely possible, because in the U.S. any ideas that even hinted at looking left were immediately quashed. It amused me recently when conservatives became so terrified of reports that the IRS or NSA were monitoring them. Some even thought the latter was a new intelligence organization ! It has existed since 1952 and was among those traditionally involved in "driving out Communists".
In the U.S. if you were ever a student protesting against any military action, if you ever sat in or picketed, you probably have a file with an intelligence organization.

I encountered a young English poster here who referred to our civil rights leaders as "leftists” and "Communists" partly because he didn’t understand the times and culture here. As a leftist himself, he wasn’t trying to insult them, but it was the same accusation J. Edgar Hoover had leveled at black leaders simply for seeking to be treated equally in their own country. Many of those leaders were also devoutly religious, and would hardly have been seen as "leftist" in any other sense.
