What are some ways a teacher can be more encouraging and less critical when dealing with students who aren't performing up to expectations?

If I was a teacher, I would privately let the child and parents know, and would offer a 1 on 1 study session with me. There's no need to call out to the student and yell how they're falling behind amongst their peers. Some teachers tend to do that and I find it insensitive.
