What makes us believe others even though they may let us down?

Is it a case of being a die hard, or is it that we want to believe whatever whoever is telling us?...perhaps it's stupidity? lol do tell.

I think terry goodkind apllies here. "People believe things because they want it to be true, or because they're afraid it's true."

For me. I grew up with this guy. Knew him since kindergarten. He was like my older brother. He could have told me almost anything, and I would have believed him. He did let me down a lot, but I had faith in him. I believed *in him*, so i believed what he said, too, no matter what. I wanted to believe everything he told me was true, because i saw him as so superior to me. I almost thought he could never be wrong. I think that's part of a bond. Ignoring people's flaws or not being able to see them.

You have provided a very logical perspective. Thank you.

Well I assume it's because they do something to earn our trust. Plus if we never trusted each other our society wouldn't really work so we trust each other to some degree

@mic11225: So true...I think those who are trusting are also very sensitive and intuitive and those who can't be trusted to do as they say are somewhat insensitive to others. Interesting how that works.

@OWise1: being betrayed or let down would make you less sensitive to other people though because you don't know if theyll hurt you too.

@mic11225: I think you react more as a result of people letting you down not less however, I can also see where one would become numb and put up an invisible shield as you may see the writing on the wall of being hurt. It's like both situations can occur.
