#1 rule about cops, they lie. Never tell them anything that you're not legally required to do. You're also legally allowed to deny them your ID unless they have probable cause to arrest you. You can also just walk (don't run) away.

I personally don't trust cops, I've had my run in with them and as someone with a mental illness, I've been treated awfully. As well as my brother who's schizophrenic.

Too many times, people talk too much to cops when they think that they can talk their way out of a situation. That's pretty rare and you can firmly, yet politely, assert your rights.
