What is your favorite Metallica song?

This is such a tough question. I can trace the single moment my interest in music became something more than just casual. I owe that moment to Metallica. It’s 1988, I’m just turning 13 years old and I take my meager allowance and buy ”...and justice for all” on cassette because the best I can remember, the album cover looks cool. I pop it in my cheap walkman knock off and the opening fade in to “blackened” (the first song on the album) starts taking over my world. It’s different, it’s harmonious and then the guitars come in, heavy, rhythmic, pounding. Then they start talking about the end of the earth and that it’s our fault. I’m hooked This is no mainstream stuff I have listened to before. There is no compromise or bullshit here. That radio friendly stuff like Poison and Bon Jovi instantly got relegated into the crap category. On that day, I discovered what real music was and the horns have been up ever since, even 30 years later. BTW their best song is probably “for whom the bell tolls” but it’s hard to pick. I’m NOT a hater; however, with the way my life played out, I’m not a lover either!!! They fell into the time that I was a pure Country music freak. My Country phase was followed by a Blues phase, so I NEVER knew their music well enough to fall in love with anything that they performed. Occasionally, I hear something that I think “wow that’s good” & then I find out it’s Metallica. Couldn’t give you the name IF you offered me a million dollars!!! I’ve now heard enough of their stuff to understand why others like them; but, I have NO fond memories to attach to anything they ever did. Just one?! Here’s my 5:
1) Dyers Eve: Just…what a way to close a phenomenal album. A technical anti-natalist thrashing.
2) Orion: I love all of their instrumentals, but Orion hits the hardest. If you ever get the chance, definitely listen to this while looking at the stars on a clear night.
3) The Four Horsemen: I love the Sweet Home Alabama-rip off breakdown in the middle
4) Harvester of Sorrow: Probably the heaviest song they’ve ever made
5) Creeping Death: It’s the perfect Metallica song. You have a great solo, the “DIE!” chant, brutal lyrics about Moses…what’s not to love there?
I saw them in concert summer of 2022. Excellent concert and it was high on my bucket list but I would definitely see them again, if given the opportunity.
I’m not very familiar with their music, but I do love “Enter Sandman” (obvious choice, I know) and I’ve always been very impressed with the drummer (Lars??).
I'd have to say 'For Whom The Bell Tolls'. Being a bass player, cliff's work on this song is the most fun I have playing. Also, I think the topics of the songs on Ride The Lightning are very unique which originally got me interested. I plan to get a tattoo of the lyric "Take a look to the sky just before you die, it's the last time you will!". That part played live is amazing.
Man it's tough to just choose one, but I guess I'll go with Master of Puppets. Killer opening riff, cool interlude in the middle that builds up to the solo, and of course the well written lyrics. The whole song is just a banger.
As a semi - new Metallica fan, i got into them in 2007 i was 14/15, always knew of them through my dad being a guitar player. At this point ive listened to all their catalog many times over. I would have to say... ONE. Especially the album version. The cold thin sound really adds the the whole atmosphere. Even tho its been played 1000s of times, no other Metallica song builds up in such an epic way, everything after the 2 verses is legendary. One might be the best song of all time. It all fell into place and it suddently all made sense- really terrible time I had going on, then around that time I decided to explore ReLoad. While it’s not Metallica’s most highly regarded song, it means a lot to me because of when I first heard it and what I was going through at the time. Our radio station plays a shortened version and it makes me sad cuz there are juicy bits out of it and its sad. I wish for the Cities sake they would play it in full. Lars mentioned there was a longer version, and i would pay $10 for that as a single with a couple live songs from the last three albums.
Moth into the Flame since there is a working old television and an flying insect(moth) changes the channel. Plus the guitar really shines the potential and does much good to itself in this track. There is Kirk Hammett to thank for that!

I liked the Kill Em' All album..some great songs on there. I saw them in the 80s when Cliff was still with them..84 or 85.

They are real musicians and artists who know how to craft a song.
