i almost never give them anything. the only exception is if they have a clearly visible reason why they probably can't get a job like an apparent mental illness or physical handicap. giving is most often a self-serving act. people give so that THEY can feel good about themselves while the person who receives is left feeling shitty about themselves. I sit with them, talk with them, treat them like a regular human being. my city has plenty of resources if someone is really hungry. people are like emotional vultures and they see someone down and they see this as the perfect occasion to look like a savior. sometimes, hitting the bottom is motivation to change your life, and if for a moment they are left to rely on themselves instead of relying on others they might find that they are much stronger than they thought. the worst type of emotional vulture trying to look like saviors are people online saying that they will "send they prayers" 🙄. basically means " I want to get the gratification that comes with helping without actually doing anything at all" .
