Could a past society understand present day technology?

Suppose a modren 2022 automobile was sent back to colonial America in the 1700s.Would the scientists and mechanics there have any hope of understanding what in was and what made it work?

Well, most people today don't understand technology, but I'm sure there were minds powerful enough in the 1700s that could have figured it out.
