Why is there so much wrong with the world today?
The world is a better world than it has ever been. One thing or even ten or even one hundred things bad happening do not even come close to the horrible life conditions of the past. We are more aware of things like these bombings because we have communications that can cover anything anywhere in the world.
People are able to disconnect and disassociate themselves from other people. They can see an entire group of other people as a unified force, and as something 'other' that does not invoke feelings of empathy or compassion. When there is war or violence, it often stems of people not thinking the other party is entirely human, on some level. A lot of people wouldn't dream of robbing their family or loved ones, yet are perfectly willing to do so to random strangers because they can detach themselves emotionally from those strangers.
I love it when people say 'oh but we're living in the most peaceful time in history!' Yeah tell that to the people living in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, North Korea, Rwanda and all of the other places messed up by war. Truth is we're living in our nice western bubble with clean water, food and a decent internet connection and when shit comes down on our heads we get a small taste of what it's like for the rest of the people who live on this planet. As to what's wrong in the world, it's people, not religion, not politics, not anything else, just people. Our technology has advanced but our attitudes haven't, we still have that primitive part of our brain telling us to protect our own and be suspicious of outsiders. We just need to keep trying to be better people and in a few hundred years we'll all hopefully be better more tolerant people.
There are always going to be exceptions but even in places that are not in the "bubble" are experiencing less violence. its not just a western culture benefit. And because there are violent situations in a few areas should not minimize that overall less violent world. I have made sure the an orphanage in Uganda is fully fed and sheltered every day for the last few years... this is good. But there are still orphans struggling in other areas. We can't fix it all, (yet) but we can recognize that it is getting better even when we know that some children died today.
You can point out that there is a dictator that is violent and torturing and starving his people. But most of us are not going to let that deter us from appreciating that the world is better and getting better. Some of us live it and witness it all the time.
I said I feel like it is becoming more stagnant. It'll be a few years before we can tell. My reasons for thinking it's becoming stagnant: The middle East is still a shitshow, the cartels are still causing havoc in Mexico, the gangs are destroying Brazil, No one will touch Korea with a barge pole and America and Russia are still fighting their proxy wars. That's just a few. I don't mean stagnant by no progress what so ever, I mean stagnant in the sense that the improvement isn't increasing by a large amount, it's just ticking by.
