If you are a world traveler, where did you go that was totally amazing and bewilderingly beautiful?
I have a burning desire to travel all over the world. But how?
I have such wanderlust and i want to travel so bad. Like to the point that when i see youtube channels or Instagram accounts of people who travel it makes me so sad deep inside because I want to live that life style. How on earth can I do it? Should i be saving up a lot of money to pay for the plane tickets, accommodation, food, ect for the amount of time I’m travelling? I feel like doing that would limit me to travelling only once or maybe twice a year as I don’t make that much money. I want to travel to different countries as often as possible. I also want to stay in those countries and explore for more than just a measly week or two so idk how i can travel a lot but also keep a good job back home for steady income to support my dreams of travel. How do people do it? I feel like my time is running out because I’m getting older. Im a 26M from Canada. I have only ever travelled to the US and Mexico. I have a passport and i have like 6k saved from years if working. How can i travel but also afford my rent and bills back home for when i come back in between trips? I just have no clue how to approach it all. I worry to much about being broke when I’m back thus making it harder for me to travel again. Someone please help. I feel hopeless sometimes. I know questions like this have been asked before, but I wanted to ask more about my specific situation. I'm a 23 year old male recent grad and I've realized that a dream of mine is to solo travel the world, especially while I'm young and have little responsibility. I studied abroad in Europe for a while (cut short due to Covid) and would solo travel on my weekends to different countries, so it's not an entirely new concept for me. On top of that, I traveled a fair amount as a kid, so this isn't an entirely new concept for me. My goals are as follow:
I've read a bunch of RTW posts with many people commenting how it's a bad idea to just jump around from country to country, and how it's always best to stay at a spot for some time to get the "best experience." I get that and it sounds like a fair point.
To those of you who have been to over a hundred countries. Was it worth it to you? Or did it become just a "catch em all" kind of thing, and did it turn into just a checklist? Hit a country just to check it off, move onto the next?
I am 22 and I've never been outside the United States. I've got this burning impulse to get a first-hand look at the planet for myself. Graduating college soon (BA English/comp sci) with no debt (though no spare cash either). I have never been outside the country. The only foreign language I have familiarity with is Latin. I have convinced a friend to come along if/when I decide to go. So, r/travel, do you have any good advice? Should I try to earn some money before I set off blindly on a globetrotting tour? Should I try to learn some Russian or Mandarin? Has anyone here done anything like this before?
I feel like at some point, the rate of meaning and value to your experiences starts to diminish? ie. the excitement of visiting the 99th country probably means almost nothing? versus your 6th country visited
But I've never traveled before. Never had a vacation before. (I'm 23, grew up poor). I have no idea where I want to go but I do know I want to see a lot of places and enjoy memorable experiences. I'm thinking Europe and SE Asia (maybe Perth AU too) over a 8-month period - willing to spend up to $20k in all.
Given this info, how would you design the trip? (I'd depart from San Francisco). I literally am clueless + might literally just book the itinerary/schedule that you recommend (DEAD SERIOUS) since I have no preferences at all.
On a side note, anyone interested in doing this with me? I might start in 2+ months (need to give my employer proper notice).
-Solo travel for exactly a year either (January 1 - January 1 or my birthday to my next birthday)
- Travel throughout Western USA, Costa Rica, South America (Colombia, Chile, Argentina, and maybe Brazil), Europe (specifically eastern Europe), Australia and NZ, and Asia (SE Asia, South Korea, and China)
-Do it on a budget of 30k-40k
-Bring a portable guitar with me (I want to keep practicing and getting better)
-Stay in good shape
-Don't get killed while abroad (ie plan and do things safely) (if you need reference for my size, I'm just under 6' and ~175 lbs)
Am I being too ambitious with my goals/budget? What resources can I use to start planning ahead, especially while this idea is in it's infancy. Thankfully, due to backpacking and hiking, I already have a lot of gear tailored for compact travel. Thanks so much and any advice is great appreciated!
