What do you think of U.S. Soccer’s pledge to equalize pay between its men’s and women’s national teams?

This week, the United States Soccer Federation pledged to equalize pay for its men’s and women’s national teams as part of a settlement that included a $24 million payment to a group of players for the women’s team who had sued the organization for gender discrimination. Have you been following this story, which involves some of the country’s biggest soccer stars? Was this the outcome you expected? Why or why not? What is your reaction to the settlement? What message do you think U.S. Soccer is sending with this agreement, which Mr. Das writes is “a tacit admission that compensation for the men’s and women’s teams had been unequal for years”? How do you think other governing bodies should address the pay disparities that exist between male and female players in many sports? How much do you think the comparative revenue of men’s and women’s teams matters in determining pay? How much should a team’s record of winning or losing major competitions matter? Are there other factors that you think should be taken into account?
How do you think stakeholders, such as fans, sponsors, tournament organizers, politicians and athletes, should engage with the fight for equal pay in women’s sports, if at all? Which of these groups do you think played a role in pushing U.S. Soccer to equalize pay?
What are sports like at your school? Do you feel that female athletes in your community are treated equally to male athletes?
