They've already given up their original goal of taking over the whole country. It's possible that they'll successfully annex a decent bite out of the east, but it looks like that's all that's on the table at this point.

having taken this long and suffered such punishing losses, Russia has already lost. they're already down to a pyrrhic victory at best.

@stound Totally agree. Russia has already paid way too high a price, and done way too much damage to Ukraine for control of Ukraine to benefit Russia. Even if Russia "wins" they've set themselves up for years of opposition by resistance fighters.

Putin will win even if it means nuclear war. To me if you have no chance of winning and thousands of innocents are dying why keep fighting? If surrender stops the killing then do it .People shouldn't die just to prove a point.

@MarineBob Nope. I've always had a 'live and let live' attitude towards Russia. Russia earned my enmity by violating the 'live and let live' principle towards Ukraine.

It depends on what you mean by winning.

Taking over the whole of Ukraine looks impossible and Russia has scaled back. Perhaps they are looking for some kind of gain that they can claim as a victory?
