Is buying an electric car a viable option for you yet?

Are there enough charging stations where you live?
Can you drive 400 miles/km and have charging stations on the way?
A trip from Perth to Esperance is 700 km, 450 miles with two service stations along the way having a charging points.
There are 90 Charging Stations in Western Australia which is 2.6 million square km.
There may be enough stations but what happens if there are 10 cars waiting to charge?
How long does it take to charge an EV? A 1 hour charge may last 200 km.
These are really ballpark figures.

Electric here in UK is looking more and more appealing than filling a car for £55+ at cheapest near me of £1.55/litre probably similar to 3$aus litre and then car only goes 300 miles before requiring another expensive refill. I would quite happily get a second hand electric car which brings the affordability of either paying in cash or a low monthly repayment to cost less than running a thirsty petrol car... for context the petrol car is a 1.25l 80hp petrol fiesta 2014 40 litres for 300 miles is appalling economy and not sure my driving style has changed maybe route is less efficient

im not sure id ever be able to have only an ev. im still fond of doing road trips and even with charging stations every mile, recharge time will always be far more significant than a liquid fuel reload.

@dirge how often do you make such journeys though a Tesla for example could easily cover 300 highway miles has capability to charge at a Tesla super charger gaining up to 200 miles for 15 minutes charge time so 300 in the time taken to have a break grab a coffee and relax before moving on and with the way fuel prices have been going up and up would cost less than filling up petrol to go the same distance at one point came with the cost of the car

@dirge that’s fair enough hopefully as the technology progresses and ICE is phased out the perceived limitations would with minor adaptation to journey plan be all but ironed out the technology has come a very long way in the last 10-12 years and efficiency and range will only improve and the technology for it get cheaper/ more comparable to ice

I've always bought my cars cash, outright at point of purchase. That seems untenable with the cost of an electric one. But I am on a pension so that big a slice of monthly outgoing for something I use say 3 timez a week now.... I seriously wonder.

I think more likely I may use uber for local and rent a car for long journeys in future

There are lots in london. Ive even recently seen one outside someones gated property. Howver a lady i know had to drive to Wales and said she had trouble finding charging points and it really scared her. But others i know who have them seem to be happy.

I would not set off until I knew there were enough charging stations allowing me to get to my destination.

@Gusman a couple of petrol stations on the way were either closed or the charging points out of order. Shes a senior citizen who mostly drives short distance.

There are plenty of charging stations where I live. I usually see lots of teslas too driving around and they don't seem to be having any issues

I cannot see how ev's are ever going to be a viable option for Australians involved in interstate or regional travel. This is not Europe.
