Generally I find Tucker to be too one-sided and obtuse to bother with, but he does get to the heart of the issue here. A study I looked at found that with the average homeless person costs about $76,000 in the combination of homelessness services they receive and the results of all that effort is pitiful. It's far easier and cheaper for officials to throw them into some housing and keeping them off the streets.

Drugs and mental illness are still major, major issues with the homeless, but letting drugged and dangerous people out into the public with people just trying to live their lives is reckless. The government is just offloading the burden onto the common citizen.

Granted, I doubt housing alone fixes the problem, and jail only prolongs it and kicks the can further down the line, but having at least a little stability in their lives can get them to start being productive and seeking help
