So many people shooting guns into the air

Excited for the new year but I should have driven home an hour ago. So many gun shots and fireworks.
Some automatic.

They probably were fireworks. My neighbour's sounded like gun fire and cannons! 馃槃

@StickyToffeePudding No where I'm from we actually shoot guns my dad used to go outside a rear and do that as well
@REMsleep Why ? You know those bullets have to come down somewhere ! That鈥檚 just not very smart, even for gun owners.

@bijouxbroussard I always wondered about that, then not long ago saw a video explanation that IF you fire directly up into the air, the bullets come back to earth at terminal velocity, too slow to do much damage. Kind of like the way that old "toss a penny off the Empire State Building and kill some one" is a myth.

@ChipmunkErnie Yes people have been doing this for ages and for the most part it is very safe. A few people here have mentioned someone that they knew that died or was hurt due to shooting in the air, but I personally believe that it is because someone shot wildly or because of a ricochet or something of that nature.
Basic physics, if you shoot straight into the air it is not going to kill anyone because the bullet fight gravity until it hits terminal velocity and is forced down at gravity x mass.
Last night I must have heard hundreds of rounds not that I advocate for this because I'm not even a gun owner at this time and I don't partake in that tradition because in general 15 people shooting various firearms in a small neighborhood feels unsafe but not due to a bullet falling from the sky. Im more worried about an accident
@ChipmunkErnie Are you kidding me ? People shooting guns up in the air (usually after drinking) are hardly making sure they鈥檙e aiming directly in a straight line ! Maybe in the country folks can get away with it. But people in the city are stupid enough to do it, too. When I lived downtown one of my windows got shot out by such a moron. Hardly a penny, hardly the Empire State Building. 馃檮

@ChipmunkErnie Bullets can hit things on the way up too.

@bijouxbroussard Yes last 4th of July my moms living room window was shattered. We think that it was a bullet but we never found the casing. A reckless person probably shot at an angle from a distance

@bijouxbroussard I said "shooting directly up into the air", nothing about shooting AT things like windows. Just pointing out the fallacy that a bullet shot straight up will fall down at a speed high similar to its muzzle velocity. Sorry if you misunderstood.
