Truck driver's sentence commuted from 110 years to 10
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has reduced a 110-year sentence to 10 years for a truck driver who killed four people in 2019 after he said his brakes gave out.

Polis announced Rogel Aguilera-Mederos' commutation on Thursday, a week after a Colorado district attorney asked the court to reconsider his sentence, and explained his reasoning in a clemency letter.

"You were sentenced to 110 years in prison, effectively more than a life sentence, for a tragic but unintentional act. While you are not blameless, your sentence is disproportionate compared with many other inmates in our criminal justice system who committed intentional, premeditated, or violent crimes," Polis wrote in his letter to Aguilera-Mederos.

The "arbitrary and unjust sentence" was a result of Colorado's mandatory minimum sentencing laws, the governor wrote.
Governor's of many states have a wide range of powers. It's actually not the judicial system that actually did this.

And this governor, like most politicians, wants to get reelected.

He could have easily pardoned.

@DeWayfarer Even the judge felt it was excessive, but he was bound by the state's mandatory sentencing law.

@chrisCA I know yet, yet the laws are voted on "by the people". Going around the voters says a whole lot about the system.

@DeWayfarer I have more faith in people who are learned, and educated in the spirit of the law, not mob rule.

@chrisCA I have total lack of faith in politicians no matter how much education they "claim" they have. A little money is a guarantee for such degrees. As certain recent law suits have proven over the last few years.

@DeWayfarer Considering some of the voters who showed up at Trump rallies, I would rather take my chances with politicians.

@chrisCA I am most definitely no fan of Trump and he has proven my point by his own falsified educational degree!

@MarmeeMarch you're the one that brought up the immigrant thing! And even still there's a minimum GPA and SAT score.

@MarmeeMarch by falsifying the SAT Score. You're being purposely dense! So you are you referring to yourself?
