“The Painted Bird” by Jerzy Kosinski. It’s about a young Jewish boy wandering Central Europe during WWII.

@redredred When it was first published it was said to be true. People believed it was based on Kosinski's experiences as a child wandering around Eastern Europe during World War II. Years later, when it was exposed as fiction, it had a big impact on people like me who had believed it was more than just someone trying to make money and be famous.
