Posts the last couple days about who pays on dates is giving me flashbacks

Not many here probably can remember Sadie Hawkins Day, spawned from the old L'il Abner comic strip. Most probably can't relate to L'il Abner or the original meaning of the word twirp: The Woman Is Required to Pay. In the long gone days of clearly defined gender roles, it was the one day a year for role reversal. Sadie Hawkins Day was a big deal in high schools, because the girls got to ask out the boys. TWIRP applied, of course. Not a feminist power thing, but a fun role reversal day in a time when most women didn't work and were pretty much locked into stay-at-home futures. So of course men normally paid for the dates -- the women had little money, and were basically auditioning for their future life roles. We've come a long way, and mostly for the better. But from the questions being posed and debated I would say neither gender has yet quite sorted out the dating etiquette issues. Much simpler when you knew which day was Sadie Hawkins Day and TWIRP.
I think the reason why men are still sometimes expected to pay is because they're still usually the ones doing the asking.
