Most of what I know about about Ukraine is in relation to the conflict between NATO and Russia. Ukraine is kinda a middle-income country that used to be part of the USSR. It's got a lot of ethnic Russians, particularly in the east. Its government has been seeking closer ties with NATO to cope with Russian aggression, and has gotten significant economic and military aid from it. I'm pretty sure it tried to join NATO, but the NATO powers didn't wanna let it in because Ukraine was too vulnerable to Russian aggression, and allowing a NATO power to be invaded would hurt confidence in the alliance.

I know about the terrible famine (genocide) that happened there thanks to the Soviet Commies. Ukraine was known as the breadbasket of Europe. Heartbreaking.
