Do you like uniforms? Or should kids be able to wear what they want?

I'm in Germany and go to a private school, so here we have uniforms. I don't mind them, but some rules are weird. 馃ぃ

My children wore their own clothes in primary school but from intermediate age onwards they wore school uniform. In all the high schools I taught or relieved at students wore uniform, except for a couple that allowed the senior year to wear mufti.

School uniform is pretty common is New Zealand. It is positive that gender neutral options are now being introduced to schools. When I started teaching in 1976 the junior boys shorts were designed to be shorter than the older boys. I don't mind a uniform item for the senior year but I don't agree with highlighting the fact that the year 9 and 10 boys are junior to other boys through uniform.

@MrDobson Here in Germany most kids wear their own clothes but I go to boarding school so we wear a uniform with hats and everything. 馃檲
That's weird that the made younger boys shorts shorter. :O Here, we have different colour jumpers for senior and junior year.

Ideally we want children to be able to dress themselves, choose clothing they like and even express themselves with fashion, if they like.
In practice it leads to social stratification and bullying from preschool through college because the community context is a dangerous one. With uniforms, you avoid some of that.
Self expression is for places that are less dangerous than our country at this time.

I don't mind as long as they're not too strict about it. When I was at school, the girls weren't allowed to wear trousers, even in the winter! I don't think that would be allowed today, that's discrimination! Also sometimes the uniform can cost quite a lot which is hard for parents who don't have a lot of money coming in.

@Fluffybull Girls in my school aren't we're just allowed to wear trousers from last year.
My uniform had a lot of different parts, even a school bag, so it can be expensive.

I go to a private school in England. The uniform is quite old fashioned and there is a lot of purple in it 馃檮 We have to wear skirts, even in the winter, but ours is a girls school so we can't say we are discriminated against.

@SW-User I go to a private school in Germany and our uniform is the same, but girls here can wear trousers now if they want to.

@Manfredthemanic I wish we could. I would prefer trousers to tights in the winter.

@SW-User Yes, a lot of girls in my school said they am thing so they asked for the rules to be changed.

I had no uniform growing up. It was nice sometimes but I would watch movies or TV with schools in uniforms and wish I could wear uniforms for some reason

@marya Uniforms aren't bad but some of the rules are weird. Like we have to wear our hats and blazers in the corridors, our socks have to be a certain length if we are wearing shorts. No keyrings on our bags.. Etc
