but what does that even mean?

In my childhood, my older sister used to say I was weird for using big words.

but.....why is it weird?

little did she know that I couldn't even spell half of them.

As a kid, I just thought that bigger words had more specific definitions. or at least that's how it felt.

it still feels that way. and I always want the word that matches what I truly mean.

in the days of texting and typing EVERYTHING, the need to use more specific words just grows.

I’m often told to use simpler words too. But you know what? My kids have a broad vocabulary because of the words I threw at them since there toddler days. They are now in their teens.

I had the same from Teachers when I was at school.

I remember saying that reading broadens your vocabulary and understanding.
Which they seemed to begrudgingly acknowledge

It's how she limited what she'd hear from you.
In my family, we frequently say "never use a big word when a diminutive one will do."

Two reasons why people would respond negatively to sesquipedalian vocabulary: (1) they think you're putting on airs; (2) if the word is unfamiliar it makes them feel somehow inferior.
