Dear American Friends, when I was staying in your fair country I came across a most unusual vegetable that I have never been able to find in the UK

and I wondered if you could give me some more information on it's origins and perhaps where I could purchase and possibly imports (in line with UK and EU laws). A strange looking thing, brownish in colour (color) although this could vary from pink, white and other hues. Raw it was distasteful and unpleasant but cooked it was very palatable. The natives used to cook this vegetable (it may be a fruit, but I am not sure) in to finger sized delicacy and I believe they called them 'ships' or 'chips'..the fruit itself they called a 'potato' or similar. Have you ever heard of such a thing and where could I purchase one over here?

@Bang5luts Thank you for the fascinating answer.

@soar2newhighs Clearly they use dollars in this great country that you have probably never been to. The UK is not just England by the way.

@AndysLoft great Britain, Wales, Scotland, Ireland? The United kingdom?
AndysLoft · 56-60, M
@Bang5luts No, not quite. Most of Ireland is not part of the UK, the 6 counties in the North are.

@AndysLoft no one complained in world war 1 or 2 that we didn't know where England was or which countries close to them they conquered and absorbed.

@Bang5luts If you were educated, which clearly you are not you would be aware that the South of Ireland remained neutral during the second world War. You are a fantastic find, you belive the Hollywood version of History, Bletchly Park, the cracking of the enigma all happened in Manhattan with 100% US scientists. Scrunches hat in hand and stares at you in awe....

@AndysLoft I am self educated beyond the government allotted one size fits all education I received. My family is from south Wales, and Ireland. Scrunch whatever you wish. Instead of concerning yourself with scrunching your hat that you might want to save for a place to use to relieve your bowels when I educate you on the reality of the current times and near future. I may not be well educated on the matters of history as it is written, but one thing I do know is "Great Britain" exists today as a sovereign nation because "Uneducated" Americans like my grandfathers were stupid enough to go and die defending that entire region while Englishmen were having their proper "Tea time" my grandfather's blood was spilt to protect those whom couldn't protect themselves. And you are welcome. And if you think I am an uneducated waste id oxygen wait! Our government is busy breeding the next generation to be even more ignorant. Scrunch your hat over that dear sir.

@Bang5luts Sir, your badly written and sadly misinformed rant cuts no ice with me, I can see that you are 'self educated' although it is also clear that messers Dunning and Kruger had a hand in your schooling. There were no 'British' men having their 'tea time' when your ancestors joined us in the fight against Hitler.

@AndysLoft poor guy. I feel for your sorely misplaced frustration and truly hope that you sir live a long a happy life in the company and appreciation of those who truly appreciate and love you. Good day to you. 😊

@Bang5luts I have no frustration with the likes of you Sir nor do I feel the need to post badly informed rants.Thank you for your concern but I would instead direct your energies into research and a 'proper' education. It is early morning here but I am sure you would not believe that as I am sure you think the Earth is flat. Have a nice day.
@AndysLoft Never got to Europe. Wanted to be stationed in England but that’s not what the USAF wanted. Wound up in Asia. I’m sure the dollar (US) can be found and used in many countries. It was when I was in Korea and Taiwan.
Am aware that the UK comprises more than just England.
