The reason there is controversy is because he believed his own lies. He told everyone that it was "his turn" and that he "deserved" to make it to the top after decades of climbing and throwing other climbers off the cliff just to get ahead.
On the day of the summit he was blindsided to find out that no one cared what he thought he "deserved" and the other guy made it to the top instead and Sir Clinton just threw a fit, stomped his feet like a three year old and refused to give a concession speech...uhhh I mean refused to leave the mountain.
And if you actually meant Sir Edmund Hillary, he gets credit because the other climber in the running died somewhere near the top and any proof of him actually reaching the top (if he did) dissapeared with him.
