Why am I thinking of this now?

A few years ago... my Pakistani and Indian co-workers told me I was “a typical white person” because I didn’t wash my rice before cooking.

Well... obviously I changed that. But I can’t figure out why the rice needs to dry.

I wash the rice with water. I dry it. Then I put it back into water.

The drying part doesn’t make sense.

Do you wash your rice? Do you wait for it to dry or is the drying part just telling you not to keep it soaking in water?

After your comments... I’m starting to think the ladies at work were messing with me about drying the rice.

And laughing there asses off...who wants dry rice unless it is rice crispy treats. Those are delicious btw. @SW-User
@SW-User they are

SW-User
I do wash my rice. I do not wash it. lol.
@SW-User ☕☕ Been there done that ☺️
SW-User
@softspokenman lol. How's you? ☺️
@SW-User 🥴 When my eyes open I'll be ok
Depending on what sort of rice I’m using I’ll wash it or even soak it overnight. The drying part I haven’t really heard of? Unless you are making rice balls or sushi or something 🤷‍♀️
SW-User
@Notladylike I’ve soaked lentils. I never guessed you could soak rice.
@SW-User I make a fish curry dish with sticky rice. The rice needs to be soaked for at least six hours to get the right texture
SW-User
@Notladylike That sounds tasty.

We wash our rice. But don't dry it
I am indian.
SW-User
@Gangstress I think the ladies at work were just messing with me.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@SW-User I think they were too lol
BlueDays · 46-50, F
I wash the rice because it makes it less sticky when I cook it
I make sure I get rid of the water and the starch it cleaned off the rice but I don’t dry it
dcsm42 · 70-79, M
That’s what we do too..@BlueDays
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
Haha that's funny. Yeah we don't really do that in the west, though we should as it gets rid of excess starch and you don't end up with a mush.
I'm not sure why you're supposed to dry it tbh. I rinse it sometimes, not with brown its just with white.
SW-User
@Ryannnnnn I get a bit stressed out now if I don’t wash it early enough.

I would switch back to brown rice my wife declared she doesn’t like it (for now).

Uncle Ben has never told me to do that.
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
Their comment is incredibly stupid, why tell anyone that they are a "typical something" and what does washing rice have to do with skin colour.🤷‍♀️

I soak up rice for about 30 mins in hot water, but I never let it dry.. And it is not exactly "washing it", and I don't think it has to do with me being brown coloured 🤷‍♀️ It is just the way rice is cooked.
SW-User
@BittersweetPotato it was only one of the two that said it using the “white person” comment. She’s just that way...

But we gathered through research at work that most Americans in our office didn’t know to wash their rice.
SW-User
@BittersweetPotato yes those silly stereotypes
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@BittersweetPotato exactly this! Well said

Just ask the Asians how to make rice lol.

I'm sure they were joking about the drying. We always wash the rice a couple of times and then drain it (not dry it). It's probably just trying to remove most of the water so when you add water to cook it, the water to rice ratio won't be off. We have a very standard and calculated way of making rice, but of course, it changes with different types of rice. And yeah, sometimes we let the rice soak, depending on the type of dish we're going to make and the style of rice we're having.

Also, Chinese people prefer their rice to be fluffy and a little sticky. I believe Indian people have their rice a bit more dry and like the grains to separate?
SW-User
@Gillian This would have been the best answer if I didn't need to "stick" my response at the top.
Gillian · 46-50, T
@SW-User lol, no worries. Asians take their rice seriously.
ozgirl512 · 31-35, F
Some rice varieties have more starch, washing it before and after will make it less sticky, but not a good idea for risotto ;)
SW-User
@ozgirl512 I will remember that about the risotto.

I usually only make risotto from packages though.
SW-User
Usually wash it, don't dry it, but sometimes I don't even wash it and turns out fine still.
SW-User
@SW-User I heard washing makes it less sticky but my rice is somehow different every time. There is never a consistency.
SW-User
@SW-User exactly, I haven't noticed much the difference
When I make basmati rice usually it's perfect and I never wash it.

I am quite enjoying your comments section :D
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON I always wash my basmati rice in 5 rinses of water. For one thing it removes pesticide residues. another is that it washes excess starch away so it doesn’t stick.
Northwest · M
I never wash rice prior to cooking it.
SW-User
@Northwest Sometimes tiny stones are in it. You need to wash it in a strainer and inspect it, pulling out any particles of dirt or pebbles before cooking.

Unless you're making a boil in a bag or microwaveable rice?
Northwest · M
@SW-User I have yet to devolve to microwaveable rice, but I can see through the plastic Trader Joe small rice bag that there are no tiny stones in there :-)
SW-User
@Northwest lol. Trader Joe's is a whole different ball game. I believe they clean it prior to bagging.
SW-User
I've never dried it, just always washed it before I cook it
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Now you got me hungry for rice! 😐
SW-User
I rinse it well. You don't have to dry it .
summersong · F
I wash but never dry rice
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
I cannot say, but I definitely think they were yanking your chain about drying it. 😂
