Well if you come to know a stranger then they are not a stranger anymore..
And anyway if a stranger betrays you then the loss is tempoary.. If you confide in a family member and they betray you the damage can be suffered for years and years..

You don’t choose your family members. That’s happenstance. But by the time you’ve called someone a friend, presumably you’ve gotten to know them and they’ve proven to you they can be trusted. They’re no longer a “stranger”. I have a family member who has stolen from me. But I have friends going back 35 and 45 years whom I’ve been able to trust with my life.
Family will abuse you due to close proximity and convenience. Strangers are less likely to have that kind of access to you.

In my case, my closest friends are the family I wish I had, had.
Not all of us are blessed to be in a family where "blood is thicker than water".

@Peapod That saying actually is the exact opposite in meaning. The full phrase is "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." Meaning bonds formed by choice are stronger than circumstances of birth.

Sometimes friends are better than family...

I never said I thought so. In fact people with troubled family relations will have difficulty with friendships all their lives

I trust very few people. Including most of my family members.
