Nah. Guns are bad and a waste of money and our love affair with them is dysfunctional to the extreme. They are nothing more than a case of False Advertising that entirely too many people have fallen into the trap of. See they are advertised as providing protection who's going to stop the burglar who breaks into your home while the police are on the way? But the truth is statistically if you buy a gun the people you live with are going to know about it and you're more likely to get into a nasty altercation and fight with them and wellah, you get shot with your own weapon.

Guns don't make use more safe, they rob us of safety and are an unnecessary risk that entirely too many people have been hoodwinked into taking.

The Gun manufacturers should be sued into having to close their doors for false advertising.

@PDXNative1986 im not really concerned about the safety issue in the least regarding gun ownership. a gun is undoubtedly a lethal tool with a tremendous capacity to kill. owning one can be a form of protection but anyone unserious enough to not respect it as a weapon that can instantly kill a human being is responsible for their own fate. that said I def agree gun culture in america has increasingly become unhinged. Regardless the answer is to not take the guns away (something that would be impossible to do anyway) the answer is to promote responsible ownership and respect for the weapon. and hold all people (especially police) who misuse the weapon accountable.

@NoahB I think we need laws to screen out dangerous, unfit people from gun owner ship. The 2017 Las Vegas shooter had 24 guns in his hotel room, including 14 .223 AR-15 type rifles, and 8 .308 AR 10-type rifles. That is insane. No one should be able to own that many military-grade weapons.

Incredibly, Several people from the Las Vegas shooting were also present during another mass shooting, the November 2018 mass shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, which left thirteen dead, including the gunman. One person said the number of Las Vegas survivors at the bar may have been as high as 60. It was confirmed that a survivor of the Las Vegas shooting died in the Thousand Oaks shooting.

@badminton the las vegas shooter would have very likely passed any screening process though. he didn't have a record iirc

@NoahB It may be that no gun control legislation will be passed in our lifetimes. The gun industry has a horde of lobbyists and lawyers in Washington DC and at every state legislature, to block any laws that would cut into their profits. And they give campaign contributions to our Congress-people, so they are beholden to the gun industry.

Even if the effort is futile, sometimes you just have to say what you believe is right. For Las Vegas, Orlando, Sandy Hook, El Paso, Virginia Tech and all the other shootings, and the daily handgun murders and shooting accidents.

@badminton I agree, the NRA is extremely evil but don't think outright banning firearms is the solution.

@NoahB I support civilan gun ownership, I just want screening laws to prevent dangerous unfit people (the mentally ill, criminals, drug users, alcoholics) from buying guns, and a ban on military-grade weapons (AR-15, AR-10, AK-47, etc.) sales to civilians.

For years I owned a .38 revolver and a 20-gauge pump shotgun. I believe those civilian-type guns are fully adequate for home protection, and I never felt any need for a military-grade weapon such as an AR-15.

@badminton The mentally ill are not the problem with guns.

A lot of these mass shooters are neurotypical and perfectly functional and know better but just kill people anyways. The mentally ill are more likely to be their victims.

@PDXNative1986 I'm going to have to disagree with you on this. Some mentally ill people have paranoid delusions causing them to feel others are out to get them. It is very dangerous for such people to have access to guns. Examples include the Sandy Hook shooter, a clasic paranoid schizophrenic. And the mass shooter in the Las Vegas killed 60 people for no know reason.
