I am very late in asking this question, but 10 months in to this pandemic it is obvious that face masks will be a normal part of life in shops and transport etc for the foreseeable future. Currently I'm walking around like Bane from Batman in a painter and decorators mask. I have seen very few patterned or 'nice' looking masks, mostly people are using the generic surgery looking ones which just depress me a bit. Which do you have / use? Do you think it is trivialising to have a 'fashion' mask or doesn't it matter?
Anyone who thinks fashionable masks are trivializing COVID-19 has no soul. I can't imagine how anyone gets a wink of sleep with such an uptight and aggressively humorless attitude. I have fashionable masks and they look pretty OK.

I have both kinds of masks, but only bc I got a custom mask from work. I don't think it matters, and I believe sooner or later, putting on a mask will be second nature , not unlike applying deoderant or brushing your teeth. If the mask actually helps seems almost irrelevant now. In the off chance that it does prevent the spreading of deadly viruses, it's worth the slight inconvenience...imo. The mask is practical, bc it symbolizes solidarity, and sends the msg that you care about your fellow man, and I take comfort in that alone.
@SW-User Similar thoughts to mine, really. I think a lot of people do it for others benefit or just for the visual reassurance. I would be comfortable enough without one as long as reasonable distancing is happening.
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I'm not talking about wearing one or not wearing one, I mean wearing just a plain 'disposable' one or one that you have chosen for how it looks.
Doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it is a good mask and it works. I have a blue one, a blue and white striped one and a unicorn one made by a local artist. I bought it because I support local artists. The other two I bought as they were thick and durable. I wear surgical masks or N95s at work. I wash the cloth ones regularly. Masks will be part of our lives for some long time to come.
You’ll notice responses from younger people talk about fashion and us oldies would likely use something just functional.
Ever wonder if the fashionable ones are akin to a baby’s pacifier ? Ensuring younger people wear them ?
One wonders who exactly is making money from the sale of these things.
The other thing that bugs me personally is that I change my face mask every store I go into. As I’m sure is the point. That way you don’t take anything you may have picked up at one place and then risk transferring to another.
Can’t imagine those who wear fashionable ones doing the same. Or maybe they do 🤷♂️
@Picklebobble2 I don't see it that way at all, they both do the same job so it's not like those who want one that looks a certain way aren't concerned with the safety of it too. A lot of the designed ones in the UK at least, are sold supporting a charity.
You are right about those who just put them on and reuse them again and again without actual thought for the cleanliness, but even that is better than nothing.

Not necessarily true, though most of us older folks who I've seen wearing custom ones are the ladies. I've seen a few guys with other than plain coloured ones. Like you, I don't much care how it looks as long as it works. What i do find disgusting is seeing them on sale for $12.95 for 1 single cloth mask, someone is making a LOT of money off of a piece of cloth and some elastic that maybe cost 25 cents to make! Shame on Hanes!
I have two that my boss gave me. One is blue and one is green. Then I have a handful of the surgical masks that I also use. The wife just picked up some at the store that are all different but have not worn any of them yet.
Does it matter? Wear what makes you feel safe and happy, if you want something custom, go right ahead, but wear one at least! Mine are plain and i'm ok with that.
