Why isn't "Wednesday" spelled "Wensday"? Why do we pronounce it like that?

Many words are spelled differently than their common pronunciation

@Muthafukajones I notice a lot of English towns are spelled differently from their pronunciation. For example, Leicester, Leominster, Gloucester and Worcester are pronounced Lester, Lemster, Gloster and Wuster respectively. But I've never known why.
