What experience taught you to be more selfish?

I'm currently pretty frustrated. A lot of it is with myself. I feel like I'm doing too many favors for others and putting my life on pause. I need to learn to be more selfish.

People I'd helped out, like gone out on a limb for and sacrificed a lot for, turned out to be liars. This happened on more than one occasion.
