Why do some people peel dead skin off themselves for fun and pluck it?

ScarletWitch · 26-30, F
Ok. For one. This question is kind of triggering to me. I'm not sure if its directed towards me or not or if you are just generally curious. But I have Dermatillomania. It's a skin picking condition I cannot control. It's something I suffer from. It's all over my profile if you want to look into it and what it has done to me. It's a behavioral compulsive cycle I cannot escape from and there is no cure. I hope this answers your question.

@ScarletWitch have you spoken to a psychiatrist or psychologist about it. I know of falls under the same disorder (OCD) and for us medication and CBT help.

@basilfawlty89 I have. But each one has left for better opportunities for themselves for their occupation ahead of them so it left me abandoned and the medicine was making me not get out of bed and drowsy to the point my mind felt heavy and drugged. They gave me a drug called naltrexone that made me nauseous. And then my insuance relapsed and I was cut off from my therapy and my refills only lasted for so long. That I was cut off for over six months. I felt better but the picking got worse so Im not sure how to handle it.

@ScarletWitch I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe check some reviews in your area for decent psychiatrists and psychologists. I know there's online counselling too. As to medication maybe take a look at citalopram, it's am SSRI that seems to cause the least side effects.

Idk, but I bite skin off my fingertips when I am anxious. Not for fun, though. They say you feel less anxious when you're biting/chewing on something, because it's your brain's way of acknowledging that, "Well, of all my worries, I am at least not starving."

I'm not sure it's for fun.
