Should vigilantism be allowed?

Why or why not?

I think civilians should be allowed to use force liberally to prevent crime, but not to avenge it. If you're right there while a crime is in progress, the only two options for you are to let the crime happen or intervene, the cops could be minutes away. If you merely believe someone has committed a crime, you can invoke the power of the justice system, which is more reliable for getting the real perpetrator.

You can, a citizens arrest is stopping someone from leaving or doing anything until police come @BlueVeins

@CharlieAmiRose I was thinking more along the lines of self defense, stand your ground laws, and castle laws, but yeah citizen arrests are pretty lit. I don't think I'd even consider citizens arrests to be vigilantism, since it's basically just handing over criminals to the government.

You can use reasonable force to defend yourself, for example if someone is attacking you, you can use reasonable force to prevent it and restrain them @BlueVeins

@CharlieAmiRose Yeah I know, though what 'reasonable force' actually is depends on where you are. In some countries and US states, you have a duty to retreat, if it's possible, and what actually constitutes 'reasonable force' is up to local laws and the courts.

Retreating is the best thing to do, idk about other people but I couldn’t live knowing I took someone’s life by accident @BlueVeins

@CharlieAmiRose In some situations yeah, but if you're talkin' about a killer or a rapist, filling 'em with lead is a public service.
CharlieAmiRose · 26-30, F
Killing a killer makes you a killer, that means you should be killed?@BlueVeins
BlueVeins · 22-25
@CharlieAmiRose There's such a thing as context, you know. Killing someone to prevent others from dying is very different from killing someone for their money or as revenge or whatever.
CharlieAmiRose · 26-30, F
That’s where the law comes in, they decide if someone should be killed for their crimes@BlueVeins
BlueVeins · 22-25
@CharlieAmiRose Right, that's what I've been saying.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@CharlieAmiRose Kill people to prevent rape and murder, not as retribution for it.
CharlieAmiRose · 26-30, F
But that’s not reasonable force @BlueVeins
BlueVeins · 22-25
@CharlieAmiRose The idea of reasonable force varies from person to person. If someone's trying to kill or rape you and you run away, there's still an active attacker there who can victimize someone else. You don't exactly have a duty to stop them -- you're a civilian -- but you certainly shouldn't be punished for preventing them from causing further harm.
