Which gender is happier?

Male or female?
TinyViolins · 31-35, M Best Comment
Well, that's contingent on a lot of other factors. On average, married men are happier than single men, but single women are happier than married women. Same thing goes for childless women being happier than women with children. Overall, however, women report being more satisfied with their lives than men are.

But then you look at things like mental illness diagnoses and women are more likely to be diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Conversely, men are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol as well as commit suicide. So it's not really clear cut.

Happiness is mostly an individual thing, not something determined by which chromosomes you have.

Dog owners are happier than the general population.
So are people who regularly exercise.@TinyViolins

@TinyViolins you are so right and make many interesting points. I think men tend to not to admit to depression, they battle on despite depression and don't tell anyone.. women are more likely to seek help and therapy.

I think the biggest point though is that there's just no universal agreed upon and objective as to what actually even constitutes happiness. Is it laughing, is it pleasure, is it contentment, is it????

It doesn't work like that.. while there are generalisations, I never buy into this them vs us, or that one sex is superior to the other...

However, it would boil down to how you measure happiness.. and that's not a given to start with... men may have more, or less freedom and leisure time, women may be more or less stressed, more or less tolerant, etc...

Women do tend to be more social and socially connected, family, close friends they can talk to rather than keeping it all in... and that can mean they are more happy...but.. I would be interested in actual studies but I think on balance happiness isn't just one thing.. so it would be really hard to say

They measure countries by levels of happiness, why not genders?@Adaydreambeliever
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@AthrillatheHunt well because it doesn't work like that.. happiness levels are not sufficiently defined and agreed upon. And actually the same consideration applies to countries.. it's a subjective measure always...

I am a huge fan of psychology, and I am very into positive psychology, but from having studied this I am aware that there is no reliable method as yet of obtaining an accurate measure of happiness. The thing about it too is that it's infinitely variable, even from moment to moment..

We can only engage in generalisms.. some people seem to be happier than others..

If I were pushed to make a call on this.. I would say that women are generally happier, perhaps because of their closeness to others, we are a social species and women tend to find it easier to talk about their problems, e.g. close friends, which is hugely cathartic and also externalises the problem, providing relief and also protecting against exacerbating the problem..

But I'd rather see a definitive study or studies.. and even then there will be debate as there is just no objective, measurable, agreed definition of what constitutes happiness.
It's bedtime for me so reluctantly I won't have time to engage more on this.. if you genuinely want to discuss it I am happy to do so PM..

There’s literally TONS of studies on happiness predictors. Some have nothing to do with sex: dog owners are happier than the general population. So are people who volunteer. People who exercise or have a hobby are happier than the general population.studies even show at what age a man is the most happy (50).
Happiness is quite easy to quantify.@Adaydreambeliever

We are happier, because we accumulate many more SW coins in a much shorter time.

Depends on if she has a cute butt or he has a Platinum American Express card.

I hate to assume but I’d say men suffer less, physically.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
Women have much greater pain thresholds.
Men already inflict enough violence. Imagine if we had higher pain thresholds? @AnonymousJSS

Happier people,do,the following things, Regardless of their sex:
Own dogs
Exercise
Volunteer
Read
Have a hobby
I only do two of those things. But I’m not happy 🤔. The main reason someone was going around telling people not to like me. And I don’t know who because no one will tell me because they’re dicks. @AthrillatheHunt
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
I like you plenty. That’s all that matters. 😘🙂@Spoiledbrat

And ........ you have triggered the lgbtqsohfvzpx9000 community
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@TheBatQueen rubbish, what a bigoted and unnecessarily venomous thing to say... generally speaking, people who hold bigoted views are not a happy person!
TheBatQueen · 26-30, F
@Adaydreambeliever they come up with a new gender every few months
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
Studies show that men are at their happiest at around 50.
I’m pretty happy.

Males ... they're more laid back. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@SW-User but lots of women can be laid back too.. they have to learn to settle quarreling kids, soothe husbands, negotiate on their kids behalf and learn to make the most of things.. I honestly think that there are just as many laid back women as men.

@Adaydreambeliever yeah... possibly...I haven't met too many but I'm sure they're out there. haha

I thought men’s suicide rates were higher indicating they suffer more or at least handle it worse. But I could be incorrect
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@Mrsbetweenfatandfit Men are also known to not tell anyone about their problems and/or their depression.. they hide it.. which ultimately doesn't help.
Mrsbetweenfatandfit · 26-30, F
@Adaydreambeliever that’s true it’s a shame they feel pressure to man up
