What pieces of kitchen equipment do you consider essential ?

Odd question i know. But here's the thing.

I've moved house or living quarters so many times i haven't always had the time or the chance to take everything i have with me.
Consequently i'm amazed at the value of a good kettle and a sandwich toaster !

These things i've had for years ! And their use has been amazing !
The sandwich toaster has different plates so i can make toasted sandwiches; waffles; toast; cook meats; fish; veggies.....endless !

The coffee maker is essential. Beyond that, as long as I have a stove/ oven I'm good.
bowman81 · M
@SW-User I hear you on the coffee maker, but have been known to make hobo coffee in a big pot.
SW-User
@bowman81 I like a good pour over which only requires the ability to boil water, so I get you there. As long as there is coffee, doesn't matter how you make it! 😉
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
A wok is extremely versatile 🙂
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Dlrannie Very true ! Is there a 'secret' to buying a good one ?
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
@Picklebobble2 Not really but get one with a lid and a steaming rack 🎎🇭🇰 Oh and keep it lightly oiled when not in use so it doesn’t go rusty 🙂

@GBPackersFan just roll it like a giant burrito. It'll be ok.

Vent, cast iron pan, sauce pans with covers, scraper, spatulas, whip, chef's knife, can opener, peeler, paring knife, mixing bowl, spoons, strainer, stove, refrigerator, wide smooth work surface.
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
I agree with the cast iron pan..they are great!@Tastyfrzz
MrPerditus1 · 61-69, M
Can opener, coffee maker, frying pan, pot, cooking utensils (like spatula, stirring spoons, ladle) and a strainer
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@MrPerditus1 Good can opener, yes i agree !
The one i have is a funky looking thing. Created by my late Uncle.
A hand operated mix of metal with a wooden handle. But it's always worked really well !
MrPerditus1 · 61-69, M
@Picklebobble2 Having a good can opener is a must, it's why I put it first. I mean there are many ways to open cans without one, it's just so damn safe and easy with. :)
MougyWolf · 36-40, M
Heat source, decent frying pan, wooden spoon, and very sharp knife. I can make a lot of things happen with that.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I have two items I am using quite a bit. A convection bowl cooker, it saves energy compared to baking in an oven and does not create smoke when broiling meats the way an oven broiler does. Also my ceramic- plate flip waffle maker. I can make waffles, brownies, cornbread, hash brown potatoes, etc in it. Easier than making pancakes.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@cherokeepatti I have a 'Slow cooker'. Big ceramic thing that sits in a case.
You fill it with anything from meat and veggies to a roasting joint and it cooks really slowly.
Supposedly with the same amount of power as a low watt lightbulb !

Actually that was another good investment now i think about it !
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Picklebobble2I have to a couple of them, a large one and a medium size one. They are excellent for making beans, cooks them just right as long as you have enough water. Can make roast chicken, stew, chili, etc love them
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
Cast iron skillet, electric frying pan, pasta maker, knives
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
I think you've covered the essential basics there already.
One other thing is a knife sharpener of some kind. I do not have friendly feelings towards blunt knives that are meant to be sharp. 🙂
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Wraithorn Agreed ! I do the same ! 😄
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Picklebobble2 Lol. It's strange the things us Humans entertain ourselves with.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Wraithorn I think it's the fact it's a really simple thing you can do but gives you a guaranteed benefit for your labour ! Humans love lack of effort yielding great results 😄
Nayla · 51-55, F
aside from the obious - fridge and stove, I consider my kettle, dishwasher, toaster, and instantpot essentials
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Nayla Excuse the (probably) daft question, but what is an instantpot ?
Nayla · 51-55, F
@Picklebobble2 an instant pot is a multicooker combined pressure cooker and slow cooker. Here's a link. https://instantpot.com/

It's been a godsend to me. I have a family of 6 and I can make meals in it in half the time it ordinarily takes.
Torsten · 36-40, M
a fridge, a good quality knife, chopping board and fry pan
Torsten · 36-40, M
@Picklebobble2 yeah man, most essential thing for a kitchen I think
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Torsten I spent a small fortune on some Sabatier things some years ago.
Really good investment i think.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@Picklebobble2 so they are good?
I was a chef some years back and the owners of the restaurant bought me a awesome knife set. Been using em ever since
tiggerandariel13 · 41-45, MVIP
dishwasher and my k-cup
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@tiggerandariel13 Ooh that sounds interesting ! What's a K-Cup ?
tiggerandariel13 · 41-45, MVIP
@Picklebobble2 it is a one cup coffeemaker
Tlbhtx · F
Knives and pots and pans!
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Tlbhtx Yes good saucepans are another expensive outlay but if you get the right sort they'll last !
Ironicman · 56-60, M
No words needed
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Ironicman 😄What just the one ?
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@BeefySenpie Trouble with toasters is they never seem to last too long in my experience.
Smart23 · 51-55, F
A microwave
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@InOtterWords Yes. Good kettle in a nation of tea drinkers is an essential here 🙂
