We had a boy who was a complete nightmare. He could never be squashed, didn't understand jokes or sarcasm, made embarrassing comments and answered rhetorical questions when the whole school was being addressed. Looking back, I'm sure he was on the autistic spectrum and these days we would have treated him very differently and so would our unfeeling teachers. I have some pangs of guilt 50+ years on when I think about it.
