The police in the UK are arresting people for buying stationary, Easter eggs and birthday cards

THESE ARE NOT ESSENTIAL ITEMS but even if the perpetrator buys food at the same time, if the police find out that theyve simultaneously brought any non essential items, they get in trouble

That is excessive. If the people are out buying food it is logical to buy the other stuff at the same time whilst they are out.
