It appears that she was "between insurers" at the time she went to the hospital and failed to pick up Cobra coverage which is insurance coverage for those whose employment has ended, and their health insurance along with it.

She suffered from lymphoma and was in treatment for her cancer already when she began to feel even more unwell in February. She visited the ER several times before they tested her for covid19.

She applied for Medicaid only AFTER she received the bill. Normally they will NOT cover services prior to her application.

So...she knew she had cancer, allowed her insurance to lapse by not picking up Cobra coverage and delayed applying for Medicaid. THEN she caught covid19 and the hospital is correct in billing her.

What none of these articles mention...anywhere...is that if you owe a hospital bill you can't afford to pay, you can contact their billing department and arrange to pay what you can afford every month. As long as you are paying even a small amount, the hospital will just bill you.

I know this because the ex had a $10,000 hospital bill and did not WANT to pay it, because he liked to go out to eat for lunch every day. So he called the hospital, pled poverty, and they told him he could pay them $10 a month.

So I have no pity for this woman. She knew she had a serious health condition and still allowed her insurance to lapse and didn't apply for Medicaid way back when she should have done...AND she can arrange to make small payments as low as $10.00 per month.
