That was about the hardest thing about working when my daughter was young.

I have no support and no car so I’m a little stuck @cherokeepatti

I know many will complain about what I say to you now, but if you can’t work, and have no one to help you, then go on welfare, or find something local and part-time. I now have the benefit of hindsight, and this is what I think. The system screws us enough as it is, so if it offers something, take it. @MrsCurious

@Carissimi I don’t know how single parents make it these days. People told me that 30 years ago but compared to today it seems impossible. Rents are so high that wage increases haven’t kept up with them. That’s one reason for more homeless in this area. It’s hard to find affordable places to live on a single person’s salary, pay for daycare, food, etc.

Exactly. And when there are illegals getting benefits (and some will argue that they are not, but I know for a fact they receive free healthcare), then forget about nobility, and not lowering ourselves. We paid the taxes, so if they can help illegals, they can help their own citizens. Not making this political, but just saying. @cherokeepatti

@Carissimi That is what is causing the rents to increase so much. Have to make room for them. Some of them are getting assistance or letting too many people stay in a rental & then splitting the cost. Anyone who doesn’t do either and works a lower-paying job is in a bind these days.

My thinking on welfare has turned 180 degrees. The system bilks us for our whole lives, so if you qualify, then get some of it back when you need help. I realized recently that we can’t even take a shower or brush our teeth without first paying the government for it. We are taxed on everything, except breathing...oh and food. @cherokeepatti
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Carissimi we pay sales tax on food here so yeah.
Carissimi · F
You do? I’m shocked. So in effect, we must pay the government to eat, and remain alive. They will find a way to tax us for breathing next. Maybe that’s the carbon tax. @cherokeepatti
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Carissimi You hit that nail on the head. The carbon tax is a way of controlling everything that we do or consume.

I feel resentful when I realize how little freedom we actually have. We keep thinking it’s just income taxes and state taxes, but it’s everything we do, and use. @cherokeepatti
